What the app will show

Total return, four ways

Price only (TR0), with dividends reinvested (TR1), adding share buybacks (TR2), and net of new share issuance (TR3). Each one per share and daily.

Valuation

Price-earnings ratio and earnings yield, trailing and indicated dividend yield, and each stock's yield against the 10-year Treasury and the market.

Risk

Volatility over 1, 3, 6 and 12 months, and beta over 60 months of total returns, shown as a measure of correlated risk relative to the market.

Buybacks and issuance

Daily shares outstanding turned into how much each company returns to, or raises from, its shareholders, alongside its dividends.

The index as a security

The market index with the same metrics as a stock: price, dividends, yield, PE and total return, for direct comparison.

Volume

Daily shares and dollars traded, 20, 60 and 120-day averages adjusted for splits, and relative volume, with every stock ranked by trading activity.

Relative performance

Each stock against the market, its sector or up to three other stocks, and each sector against the market, on any of the four return measures, rebased to 100 at a common start.

Charts that compare

Log-scale price, valuation and risk through time, and any two stocks rebased side by side.

Observed data, explained gaps

Figures come from company filings with the SEC and from prices as they traded, with every source recorded. Where a number would mislead, it is left blank and the reason is shown, rather than filled with an estimate.

A company earning a few cents a share can show a price-earnings ratio in the thousands. TopStockUS shows its earnings and earnings yield instead, and says why the ratio is not meaningful.

The rules behind every figure are published. Read the methodology.
